One kilometer of the canal connecting the Day River - Ninh Co with a total investment of over 100 million USD (2,300 billion VND), meeting ships of 2,000-3,000 tons, is about to be completed after more than two years of construction.
The canal project cluster connecting the Day River (left cover) - Ninh Co under the Transport Development Project in the Northern Delta, located in Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province, started construction at the end of 2020, on an area of about 45 hectares. The project has a total investment of 101 million USD (about 2,300 billion VND), from the capital of the World Bank.
The project aims to create a connection between the northern coastal transport route and watersports on the Day River, Nam Dinh, and Ninh Binh areas through the Lach Giang estuary, helping to shorten the journey time of waterways from coastal provinces to Ninh Binh by 20% and vice versa. The canal route is about a kilometer long, 90 - 100m wide, and accommodates cargo ships of 2,000 tons full load and 3,000 tons. The project is also a complex of many types such as waterways, wharves, and communications.
The project’s main construction is a lock 179m long, 17m wide, and 11m deep.
The lock, located between two rivers, operates similarly to the famous Panama Canal. When a ship enters, one side closes it, the other side opens until the river level equalizes with the inside for the ship to pass, and vice versa. Each cycle a vessel crosses lasts about 15 minutes, of which 2 minutes pump water to balance the inside and outside of the river.
This is the largest lock built in Vietnam today.
When the project is completed, it will facilitate many container cargo ships to pass through, instead of having to go to Hai Phong port and travel by road as at present.
The discharge closure door on the bottom river weighs nearly 80 tons, made of steel according to Japanese standards.
When there is a train, the large door remains closed and only the bottom two small outlets are open. When the water inside and outside the river is in balance, the new door opens to let the ship through. In addition, this gate is also responsible for preventing salt water from the Day River.
The canal construction cluster has 14 mooring posts on each riverside.
The project occupies part of the Ninh Co Riverside. Road traffic on the dike surface was replaced by a bridge of reinforced concrete structures, more than 2.2 km long, static height of not 15m.
According to the schedule, the canal will be operational next June 6. Currently, the construction site is divided into three shifts to keep up with the schedule, the main part is cutting and embellishment.
Nguyen Van Thuong, project manager, said the entire project was built by local engineers, and 90% of the equipment was also manufactured by itself. Technologically there is nothing special, but the construction encountered many difficulties due to weak geology.
"There have been some landslides that have scared many workers. The mud and heavy rain make the construction only a few months a year," said Mr. Thuong, adding that everything has now been solved with more than 80% completion progress.
Only 19km from Aurora Industrial Park, this will definitely be a key waterway transport infrastructure, and inter-regional connection, helping to facilitate water transport from the interior to Hai Phong port and vice versa, including passing through Aurora IP Textile Industrial Park.
